A man has been arrested and taken into custody following a reported assault on a woman inside a McDonald’s restaurant at Greenbridge Retail Park in Swindon.

Wiltshire Police responded to a call at around 4 pm on Friday, August 1, after receiving reports that a man inside the busy fast-food outlet had assaulted a woman. Before officers could arrive at the scene, the suspect reportedly fled. However, thanks to the quick actions of a public member, police were able to locate and detain the individual shortly afterwards.

The 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault by beating. He is now in custody as officers carry out further questioning. Authorities have confirmed that the investigation remains active, focusing on identifying and contacting the victim.

The woman had already left the premises before police arrived, and officers urged her to come forward to assist with the inquiry. Her testimony is crucial in helping establish the full details of the incident.

In a statement released by Wiltshire Police, a spokesperson said: “We are urgently appealing for the victim of an assault in the McDonald’s at Greenbridge Retail Park, Swindon, earlier today to contact us. At around 4 pm this afternoon (01/08), we received a report of a man assaulting a woman in the McDonald’s at Greenbridge Retail Park. While en route to the incident, the male suspect ran off; however, thanks to help from a member of the public, he was swiftly located by officers. The man, aged 32, was arrested on suspicion of assault by beating, and he has been taken into custody for questioning. The female victim had left the scene by the time officers arrived at McDonald’s. We are appealing for the victim to come forward as soon as possible to allow us to progress the investigation. If you can help, please contact us on 101 quoting log 227 of today’s date.”

At this stage, police have not released any description or identifying information about the woman involved, and it is unclear whether she required medical attention. The circumstances around the altercation remain under investigation.

Police have noted the prompt arrest, aided by a vigilant member of the public, as an important factor in the case. However, without the woman’s cooperation, the case may be difficult to move forward.

The offence of assault by beating falls under Section 39 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988. It typically involves unlawful physical force or violence and, if proven, can result in a fine or up to six months’ imprisonment, depending on the severity and evidence presented.

Members of the public who witnessed the incident or who may have relevant information are also encouraged to contact Wiltshire Police. Officers hope the victim will come forward voluntarily and speak with investigators as soon as possible.

The police have not confirmed whether any charges have been filed at this stage, pending further developments and the victim’s statement.
