A dangerous driver has been sentenced to prison after assaulting a police officer and leading authorities on a high-speed pursuit reaching up to 95 miles per hour. The incident began following a routine traffic stop in Doncaster, where the driver failed to produce valid insurance.

Mabast Mohammad, aged 24, of St James Street in Edlington, Doncaster, was spotted by South Yorkshire Police driving a blue BMW along a road with a no right turn restriction. Officers, including one on his first day with the force’s roads policing team, were patrolling in an unmarked car when they pulled him over after checks revealed the vehicle had no insurance. Although initially cooperative, Mohammad attempted to avoid showing insurance documents before suddenly assaulting an officer and fleeing the scene at dangerous speeds.

The pursuit ended on Burnaby Street, where Mohammad abandoned the vehicle and tried to escape on foot. Thanks to the swift coordination of officers in the area, he was quickly apprehended and taken into custody. On 15 July 2025, Mohammad was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court to 15 months in prison. He was also disqualified from driving for 19 months and will be required to take an extended retest before regaining his driving licence.

Inspector Matt Collings of South Yorkshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit said: “We know that individuals who are willing to drive without insurance are often more likely to take serious risks on the road. Mohammad’s actions demonstrate this level of recklessness. Routine traffic stops like this one often uncover wider criminal behaviour and help protect the public from those who pose a danger behind the wheel.”

He added: “Our experienced officers managed this pursuit effectively, bringing it to a safe conclusion. They put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect their communities, and I’m pleased that Mohammad will now face the consequences of his behaviour. This situation could have had far more serious consequences.”

Driving without valid motor insurance in the United Kingdom (UK) is a criminal offence and often linked to wider issues of road safety. Incidents such as this highlight the need for continued enforcement to keep law-abiding drivers safe.
