Cambodia Plans to Nominate Trump for Nobel Peace Prize over Role in Border Conflict Mediation

Cambodia has announced plans to nominate former United States (US) President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his involvement in de-escalating a recent military standoff with neighbouring Thailand. The move follows a ceasefire agreement that brought an end to several weeks of heightened tensions and cross-border clashes between the two Southeast Asian nations.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol credited Trump with helping to facilitate discussions that led to the agreement. “His mediation helped restore peace and protect the livelihoods of thousands,” Chanthol said. While specific details of Trump’s involvement remain limited, officials pointed to his role in encouraging dialogue that prevented further escalation.

The border conflict, described as the most serious in the region in more than a decade, resulted in casualties and the displacement of families living in disputed areas. Both governments have since withdrawn military forces in line with the agreement, which is now being monitored by regional observers to ensure continued compliance and stability.

Cambodia’s vital garment industry, which employs hundreds of thousands and is a key pillar of the national economy, had been exposed to potential trade disruption due to the instability. Officials noted that Trump’s intervention helped preserve economic confidence and shield the sector from the threat of US sanctions during the period of unrest.

Although the Nobel nomination remains in its early stages, Cambodia joins a small number of countries, including Pakistan and Israel, that have publicly supported Trump’s peace-related efforts. It is important to note that the Norwegian Nobel Committee operates independently, and all nominations undergo a confidential and rigorous assessment process.

The planned legal submission reflects Cambodia’s stated support for diplomatic solutions to international disputes, irrespective of political alignment. Government officials focused solely on Trump’s role in this particular mediation effort, refraining from comment on his broader policy positions.

As of this writing, neither the Royal Thai Government nor the United Nations (UN) has issued an official response to the ceasefire agreement or the proposed nomination. According to the rules of the Nobel Foundation, all formal nominations remain confidential until officially disclosed.

Cambodia’s intention to proceed with the nomination signals its commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and highlights its recognition of diplomatic efforts that contribute to long-term regional security and stability.
