Cambodia Proposes Nobel Peace Prize Nomination for Donald Trump Over Border Mediation Role

The Cambodian government has announced its intention to nominate former United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his reported role in facilitating dialogue during a recent border dispute with Thailand. The move follows a ceasefire agreement that ended several weeks of heightened military tensions between the two Southeast Asian nations.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol stated that Trump’s involvement was instrumental in creating a diplomatic environment conducive to negotiation. While full details of Trump’s participation have not been disclosed, Cambodian authorities have credited him with encouraging both sides to return to the negotiating table.

The conflict along the Cambodia-Thailand border represented the most serious military escalation in over a decade, leading to casualties and the displacement of residents in the disputed area. Under the ceasefire agreement reached last week, both Cambodian and Thai forces agreed to a phased withdrawal. Regional observers are currently monitoring the implementation of the truce.

In addition to preventing further violence, the agreement has been linked to stabilising Cambodia’s garment industry, one of its key economic sectors. Officials expressed concern that continued hostilities might have led to supply chain disruptions and possible changes in U.S. trade policy. Cambodian officials noted that Trump’s diplomatic engagement played a part in preserving economic continuity and averting further strain on international trade relations.

The nomination process is in its early legal stage and is governed by the statutes of the Nobel Foundation, which oversees the Nobel Peace Prize. According to those rules, nominations must remain confidential and are subject to independent review. Cambodian officials clarified that this announcement reflects their intent and does not suggest any endorsement from the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Cambodia joins a handful of countries, including Pakistan and Israel, that have publicly acknowledged Trump’s involvement in international peace negotiations. Government representatives avoided commentary on Trump’s broader foreign policy, instead focusing solely on his specific role in the recent border resolution.

As of publication, neither the Royal Thai Government nor the United Nations (UN) has released a formal statement regarding the ceasefire or Cambodia’s proposed nomination. Cambodian authorities described the planned legal action as an expression of recognition for diplomatic contributions to regional peace.

The announcement reflects Cambodia’s broader effort to highlight the importance of international mediation and to acknowledge figures who support peaceful conflict resolution, regardless of political affiliation or global opinion.
