Birmingham to Open Limited Housing Voucher Applications in August

The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District (HABD) will open its application period for project-based Housing Choice Vouchers (HCVs) from 7 to 12 August. The move provides an opportunity for eligible residents to join the waiting list for two key properties currently undergoing renovation: Southtown Senior and Cooper Green Homes.

The Housing Choice Voucher programme, often referred to as Section 8, is a federally funded initiative designed to assist low-income individuals and families in securing affordable housing. Project-based vouchers differ from tenant-based assistance in that the rental subsidy is tied to specific housing units rather than following the tenant. In this case, the units are located within Southtown Senior, which caters to elderly residents, and Cooper Green Homes, a development offering a range of floor plans to suit various household sizes.

Both developments are in the process of being updated as part of HABD’s broader efforts to modernise its housing stock. Southtown Senior focuses on providing smaller, more accessible units for older adults, while Cooper Green Homes offers a mix of layouts tailored to families.
