A major housing project featuring 1,200 homes, green spaces, and community amenities has been officially proposed for development near Wimborne in Dorset. The project aims to support families and address the UK’s ongoing housing shortage.

Plans for Canford Garden Village, a large-scale development close to the popular holiday destination of Wimborne, have been submitted to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council (BCP). The scheme covers 230 hectares of land and is being led by developers W.H. White. The proposed village is expected to create a sustainable and well-connected community focusing on quality design and infrastructure.

Focus on Community

The plans for Canford Garden Village go far beyond housing delivery alone. Creating a genuine neighbourhood that includes essential public services and local facilities is at the heart of the proposal. A community hub, care home, healthcare provision, education services, and flexible workspaces have all been factored into the blueprint. These additions aim to ensure the development is not simply a housing estate, but a place where families can live, work, and grow.

A large portion of the development will be set aside for green space, including a riverside park and landscaped areas that enhance the setting and offer recreational value. W.H. White has highlighted their commitment to building within the natural landscape while maintaining the area’s rural character.

To help ease the pressures of the national housing crisis, the developers have pledged that at least 40 per cent of the new homes will be designated as affordable. This move addresses growing concerns around housing access, particularly for the region’s younger families and key workers.

Crucially, the plans also involve improvements to the surrounding infrastructure. Local road upgrades and better transport links will be included to reduce the impact on nearby towns and ensure smoother connections. The design will prioritise walkability and accessibility, making the village both practical and sustainable for everyday life.

Architecturally, the village is set to reflect the area’s local style while incorporating modern, energy-efficient building standards. This focus on design aims to create a place that not only meets housing needs but also enhances the overall appeal of the region.

The planning application is now with the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council for consideration. Subject to approval, Canford Garden Village could become a key example of how thoughtful development can help tackle the UK’s housing challenges while supporting local communities and respecting the natural environment.
