A 45-year-old man was fatally shot in north-east London’s Stoke Newington, prompting a murder investigation by the Metropolitan Police. The incident occurred on Dynevor Road, near Stoke Newington High Street, at approximately 12:20 a.m. British Summer Time (BST) on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. Despite efforts by emergency services, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) administered by police, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Dynevor Road and parts of Stoke Newington High Street remain cordoned off, with police urging the public to avoid the area as inquiries continue, according to the Metropolitan Police.

The victim’s next of kin have been notified and are receiving support from specialist officers. No arrests have been made, and the Metropolitan Police are working to identify the gunman. A post-mortem examination and formal identification are scheduled to occur in due course. Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke, who oversees policing in the area, stated, “Our team of detectives and forensic specialists are working at pace to establish the full circumstances that led to the tragic death of this man. We understand this incident will cause concern within the Stoke Newington community, however we do believe this to be an isolated incident at this stage of the investigation with no wider risk to the general public.”

Local residents reported hearing gunshots in the early hours. Liza Dodds, a 58-year-old youth worker living opposite Dynevor Road, told the BBC, “My husband woke up and said there was gunshots. The instant reaction was ‘how do you know?’ We both got up and had a look. A police officer was doing CPR where the person fell. It seemed like they were going forever.” Another resident, speaking to the Hackney Gazette, said, “I heard two or three gunshots around about midnight or 12:30 a.m. They woke me up.” Some initially mistook the sounds for fireworks, reflecting the unexpected nature of the violence in the area.

Forensic officers arrived at the scene around 7 a.m., combing Dynevor Road for evidence. Images from the site show a police tent and a Lime bike lying within the cordoned area, with investigators using torches to examine under parked cars, according to MyLondon. The London Ambulance Service dispatched an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic, a tactical response unit paramedic, an incident response officer, and a trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance, consisting of a paramedic and a doctor. Despite their efforts, the victim could not be saved.

This marks the sixth fatal shooting in London in 2025, heightening concerns about gun violence in the capital. Detective Chief Superintendent Clarke emphasized an increased police presence to reassure the community, stating, “Residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area, along with a crime scene, as we carry out our inquiries. We thank them for their patience and cooperation at this time.” The Metropolitan Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward, urging anyone with information to contact them to aid the investigation. Diane Abbott, the Labour Member of Parliament (MP) for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, offered condolences to the victim’s family, reflecting the community’s grief. The investigation continues as authorities work to uncover the motive and circumstances behind this tragic event.
