Emergency services have evacuated residents from homes in Plymouth after an unexploded Second World War bomb was discovered in a residential area, prompting a safety response and road closures.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that the unexploded ordnance was found during planned work in St Michael Avenue, Keyham, on Tuesday morning. As a safety measure, properties within a 200-metre radius were evacuated, and several roads were closed to allow bomb disposal experts to assess the situation.

Officers stated that the evacuation was carried out to ensure public safety while military explosive ordnance teams examined the device. Plymouth City Council coordinated assistance for displaced residents and established a rest centre to provide temporary support.

The police described the response as precautionary, pending a full assessment of the bomb’s condition. Military personnel are working with local agencies to determine the next steps, which may include defusing or controlled detonation.

Residents affected by the evacuation were advised to avoid the area until further notice, and updates were issued through official council and police channels.

Discoveries of unexploded wartime bombs are not unusual in areas that experienced bombing during the Second World War. Keyham, due to its naval connections, was among the districts affected during air raids.
