Gumtree Reports Surge in Rental Listings and Enquiries

Gumtree, one of the UK’s most well-established online marketplaces, has recorded a sharp rise in activity across its rental property section, signalling increased competitiveness within the private rental sector.

In the week ending 31 July, the platform received over 128,000 enquiries to live rental listings, a figure that points to growing pressure on prospective tenants, particularly in urban centres and popular commuter areas. On average, each listing receiving enquiries attracted more than five messages from interested renters.

During the same period, approximately 41,000 rental listings were live on the site daily, with 8,262 new listings added throughout the week. Gumtree described this activity as “consistent and sustained growth,” also reporting a 10% year-on-year increase in the number of professional agents posting on the site.

The uptick in usage by letting agents suggests that many are turning to platforms like Gumtree to boost exposure, particularly as traditional routes become more saturated or less effective. According to the company, July delivered 16% more leads to agents than any other month so far in 2025.

“Agents are finding value in advertising on Gumtree all year round,” a spokesperson said. “With lead volumes peaking, the platform is proving its ability to deliver results.”

In a comment provided to the press, Kim Faura, a consumer expert at Gumtree, said: “These numbers highlight just how busy the market is right now. For renters, it’s a sign to act quickly and be prepared when searching many listings are seeing multiple enquiries within hours. It’s important to set up instant alerts to catch listings early and ensure you have all your documents ready to go.”

The spike in competition reflects broader concerns about housing supply constraints across the UK, particularly in areas where younger professionals and students are seeking affordable accommodation. While the government has been criticised for its sluggish handling of the housing shortage, platforms like Gumtree are stepping in to meet some of the market’s growing demands.
