A Kurdish social club owner was gunned down in what police believe to be a gang-related execution on a quiet residential street in Stoke Newington, one of North London’s more affluent areas.

Erdal Ozmen, 45, a father of three, was fatally shot in the early hours of Tuesday outside a property on Dynevor Road. The Metropolitan Police Service (Met) confirmed officers responded to reports of a shooting at 12:18 a.m. Despite efforts by police and paramedics, Mr Ozmen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Newly released closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage shows the suspected gunmen fleeing in a black Kia vehicle moments after the attack. The car turned onto Stoke Newington High Street, paused at a red light for around 25 seconds, and drove away without urgency. The calm manner in which the suspects acted has raised concerns about growing confidence among criminals operating in London’s streets.

A friend of the victim told The Daily Mail that Mr Ozmen was ambushed: “They were waiting outside. They were in a black Kia 2024. Someone shot him in the back, then came back and kicked him and shot him another two times.”

The witness claimed there were at least two people involved, one acting as the shooter and the other waiting in the vehicle. No arrests have yet been made.

The Met Police have launched a murder investigation and are appealing for witnesses, stating that the incident is being treated as isolated with no ongoing threat to the wider public. Nonetheless, residents are deeply unsettled by what appears to be a calculated and brutal attack.

Detectives have acknowledged concerns in the local community and confirmed that extra officers would remain on the ground in the area as the investigation continues. Forensic officers were seen on Tuesday combing through the street, using torches to examine the ground and checking beneath parked vehicles. A discarded Lime hire bike was also seen lying on the pavement near the crime scene.

Mr Ozmen’s past has also come to light following the incident. In 2006, he was jailed for his role in a failed attempt to shoot a man outside a petrol station in Tottenham. During that incident, he and another man, Ibrahim Aslan, opened fire and injured the victim’s arm.

Locals described Mr Ozmen as a regular figure on the street. He was often seen entering and exiting a basement across from where he was shot. Some residents claimed the premises had been raided previously and described it as suspicious.

Sandy Fabiszewska, 28, who lives above the scene, described the chaos that followed the gunshots: “I was in my bed and then I heard gunshots, it was like four gunshots. It was really loud.. When I finally came out, my flatmate said don’t look, don’t look. There was just a dead man there.”

She also spoke about the basement unit below her flat: “You can smell weed, I think they were dealing drugs. Then they got raided quite a while ago. I definitely saw the victim walking around here before. He would just be going in and out of the suspicious basement below us with quite a lot of people, like five or six people.”

Another local, who did not want to be named, said they returned home around 1 am to find the street cordoned off and police present.

Speaking to ITV News, Ali Rizi Ojur said: “I’ve known him maybe more than 20 years. He is a very good guy, always helping people, he has two kids and family.”

Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke said: “Our team of detectives and forensic specialists are working at pace to establish the full circumstances that led to the tragic death of this man. We understand this incident will cause concern within the Stoke Newington community, however, we do believe this to be an isolated incident.”

She confirmed that officers would maintain a strong presence in the area and urged anyone with information to come forward.

A post-mortem examination is expected to take place soon. The London Ambulance Service confirmed that a trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance also attended the scene, but were unable to save the victim.

Mr Ozmen’s family members, including his brothers, are expected to gather in Tottenham in the coming days to commemorate his life.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police on 101 quoting CAD 108/5AUG or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
