Starmer Pledges ‘Defence Dividend’ to Power UK Security and Jobs Boom

On May 8, 2025, Prime Minister Keir Starmer used the 80th anniversary of VE Day to unveil a major defense spending initiative, promising a “defence dividend” for the United Kingdom. This concept involves using increased military investment not only to strengthen national security but also to drive economic growth and industrial renewal. Starmer emphasized that a revitalized defense sector would generate high-skilled jobs and help rebuild the country’s manufacturing base, positioning defense as a pillar of both security and prosperity.

As part of this effort, Starmer announced a £563 million contract with Rolls-Royce for the maintenance of the RAF’s Typhoon fighter jets, supporting jobs in Bristol and other regions. He also spotlighted the introduction of the new StormShroud drones, which are designed for advanced electronic warfare. The Prime Minister called for a “national mission” involving government, industry, and civil society to safeguard the country’s future, underlining the broader vision that defense investment can serve the public beyond the battlefield.

Defense Secretary John Healey echoed this urgency, warning that global threats are at their most serious since 1945. He cited Russia’s continued aggression in Ukraine as a reminder of the fragility of peace and the need for strong alliances like NATO. With this in mind, the government is preparing a fresh strategic defense review that will guide future military reforms and funding increases, reinforcing the UK’s commitment to international security and democratic values.
