UK Tightens Graduate Visa: Post-Study Stay Cut to 18 Months

In a major shift to its immigration policy, the UK government has announced that the Graduate Route visa for international students will be reduced from two years to 18 months. The change is part of a broader immigration white paper unveiled this week, aimed at tightening post-study migration and curbing net migration figures.

The white paper also introduces stricter compliance rules for universities and mandates the use of the Agent Quality Framework when recruiting international students. Additional English language requirements for student dependents are expected, and the government is considering a potential 6% levy on income earned by universities from international students.

While the government claims these reforms are necessary for a “balanced and sustainable” migration system, critics argue the changes could harm the UK’s appeal as a study destination. Groups like the National Indian Students and Alumni Union UK expressed concern that reducing the Graduate Route duration may limit graduates’ job prospects and long-term contributions to the UK economy.

The education sector, which heavily relies on international tuition fees, has warned that these changes could have long-term financial and reputational consequences. A full rollout of the reforms is expected later this year, with more details in the Autumn budget.
