Over 150,000 Face PIP Cuts as DWP Tightens Eligibility Rules

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that more than 150,000 people will face cuts to their Personal Independence Payment (PIP) benefits due to new eligibility criteria. Starting in November 2026, claimants must score at least 4 points in one daily living activity and a total of 8 points across all activities to qualify for the Daily Living Component, currently worth £110.40 per week. These changes are expected to affect around 800,000 people by 2029/30, with many losing both their Daily Living Component and Carer’s Allowance, which provides £83.30 per week.

The revised rules are likely to have a particularly harsh impact on individuals with physical conditions such as back pain, arthritis, and musculoskeletal disorders. Many of these people, especially those with fluctuating or invisible conditions, are expected to struggle under the new system. However, those with severe disabilities or learning difficulties are less likely to be affected by the cuts. Critics of the reforms argue that the changes could disproportionately harm those who already face challenges in navigating the PIP system.

In response to growing concerns, Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall has announced plans to overhaul the disability benefits assessment process. The government intends to combine the current work capability assessment with the PIP assessment to create a single, streamlined system. This reform aims to address fairness and accessibility issues, particularly for individuals with mental health conditions or neurodiverse needs, making the process more inclusive for all claimants.
