GB News: UK’s Weak Deterrent Fuels Illegal Channel Crossings

A recent investigation by GB News has highlighted the alarming rise in illegal Channel crossings, with over 1,300 migrants arriving in the UK within just five days. The surge followed a break in bad weather conditions and has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the UK’s current border control measures. The report suggests that the lack of a strong deterrent is a key factor contributing to the persistence of these illegal crossings, with no clear sign of them letting up.

Former Border Force Director General Tony Smith commented on the situation, pointing out that migrants, especially from countries like Afghanistan and Iran, are challenging to deport due to the absence of return agreements. He emphasized that migrants are aware that reaching British territorial waters often leads to staying in the UK, making it difficult for authorities to manage the flow effectively. This highlights the ongoing challenges in curbing illegal crossings and managing immigration control.

In response to the crisis, the Labour government has introduced a £75 million Border Security Command aimed at improving intelligence gathering and prosecuting smuggling networks. However, critics argue that without a comprehensive deterrent strategy such as the previously scrapped Rwanda deportation plan these efforts may not be enough to stop the influx of illegal crossings. The debate continues over how to best address the growing issue and prevent further breaches of UK borders.
