Tommy Robinson Granted Early Release

Tommy Robinson, the far-right activist and founder of the English Defence League, is set to be released early from prison following a decision by the High Court. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, had been sentenced to 18 months for contempt of court in October 2024 after breaching a 2021 injunction. The injunction prohibited him from making false allegations about Syrian refugee Jamal Hijazi, which Robinson had done in online videos. However, the High Court reduced his sentence by four months, acknowledging that Robinson had complied by removing the defamatory content from his social media accounts.

The legal case against Robinson stems from his 2018 online videos, in which he falsely accused Hijazi of violent behavior. This led to a libel lawsuit and a £100,000 damages award for Hijazi. Despite previous legal setbacks, Robinson’s defense team argued that his detention conditions, including being kept in segregation for safety reasons, had negatively impacted his health. The court considered these factors, along with his compliance with the court order, in granting an early release.
