Russia’s War in Ukraine: Casualties Approach One Million, Kyiv Reports

As of late May 2025, Ukrainian officials report that Russia’s military casualties in its ongoing war against Ukraine have neared one million, encompassing both fatalities and injuries. This staggering toll underscores the immense human cost of the conflict, which has persisted since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently disclosed that approximately 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed, with an additional 370,000 wounded. In contrast, Russian losses are reported to include 198,000 killed and over 550,000 wounded. These figures, while difficult to independently verify, highlight the severe impact of the war on both nations.(

The conflict has not only resulted in significant military casualties but has also had profound demographic consequences. Ukraine’s population has reportedly declined by over 10 million people, approximately a quarter of its pre-war population, due to casualties, territorial losses, and over six million refugees.

As the war continues, the international community remains deeply concerned about the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region. Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire have thus far been unsuccessful, and the prospects for peace remain uncertain.
