UK Government to Shift Focus of Apprenticeships to Under-22s

The UK government has announced plans to refocus apprenticeship funding on individuals aged 21 and under, effective from January. Under the new policy, funding for Level 7 apprenticeships, equivalent to a master’s degree, will be restricted to those aged 16 to 21. This means that many higher-level apprenticeships, including those in fields like accounting, tax advising, and advanced NHS training, will no longer receive government funding and may have to be fully financed by employers.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson emphasized that the shift aims to invest in skills for young people, thereby strengthening the economy. The government plans to create 120,000 additional training opportunities for young adults and individuals needing retraining. This initiative will be supported by an increase in the charge paid by employers recruiting from outside the UK, which will fund 45,000 new training places.

However, the policy has faced criticism. The Conservative Party has labeled the move as a “disaster,” expressing concerns that it could undermine advanced NHS training. The decision to withdraw funding for postgraduate apprenticeships has raised alarms among professionals who rely on such programs for career advancement.
