Trump Claims Victory in EU Tariff Standoff

U.S. President Donald Trump has declared success in his recent tariff standoff with the European Union, asserting that his threat to impose a 50% levy on all EU imports prompted Brussels to expedite trade negotiations. In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed satisfaction with the EU’s response, stating, “I have just been informed that the E.U. has called to quickly establish meeting dates,” and emphasized the importance of opening European markets to U.S. trade.

The tariff threat, initially set to take effect on June 1, was postponed following a high-level call between Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The new deadline for resolving trade differences is July 9, providing both sides with additional time to negotiate. While the EU has not yet proposed new concessions, member states such as France, Italy, and Ireland view the delay as a positive development and are optimistic about reaching a balanced agreement.

Despite the temporary pause, the EU remains prepared to retaliate if the U.S. imposes the threatened tariffs. Brussels is considering countermeasures that could affect U.S. imports worth €95 billion, including potential restrictions on access to the European market for certain goods or services. The EU’s anti-coercion regulation, designed to counteract unfair trade practices, may be applied to the U.S. if necessary.
