John McDonnell Calls for Grassroots Leadership Challenge to Starmer Government

Former shadow chancellor John McDonnell has urged Labour members, unions, and MPs to initiate a grassroots leadership challenge against Keir Starmer’s government, warning that the party risks losing both its power and its identity.

In a recent opinion piece for The Guardian, McDonnell criticized the government’s refusal to abolish the two-child benefit cap and its perceived harsh stance on welfare, particularly concerning disabled citizens and pensioners. He described these actions as “callousness and political incompetence,” betraying the foundational values of the Labour Party.

McDonnell emphasized that the party must reclaim control to prevent further erosion of its core principles. He highlighted internal power struggles within Starmer’s team and urged members to assert themselves to safeguard the party’s legacy. His remarks reflect growing discontent among Labour MPs and activists, particularly ahead of an upcoming welfare vote and a June spending review.

The leadership is facing mounting pressure to consider a wealth tax and reverse welfare cuts. McDonnell’s intervention is seen by insiders as a direct challenge to Starmer’s leadership and a warning that the party risks alienating its core supporters.
