Bullying and Unsafe Practices Exposed in Belfast Heart Surgery Unit

An independent review has uncovered a toxic culture within the cardiac surgery unit at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital, with allegations of bullying, intimidation, and unsafe practices. The investigation, prompted by long-standing concerns, involved interviews with over 70 staff members and revealed a pattern of verbal abuse, power struggles among senior consultants, and incidents of instruments being thrown during surgeries.

The report highlights that nursing staff, particularly junior members, have been subjected to the brunt of this hostile environment. The atmosphere in operating theatres was described as tense, with many feelings pressured and unsupported. Despite these findings, the Belfast Trust maintains that the cardiac unit is “clinically safe with excellent outcomes.”

Health professionals and patient safety advocates have expressed alarm over the revelations, emphasizing the need for immediate action to address the cultural issues and ensure a safe working environment for staff and optimal care for patients.
