Wales Could Lose £466m in Welfare Reforms

The UK government’s proposed disability welfare reforms could result in a £466 million reduction in income for people in Wales by 2029–30, affecting nearly 190,000 individuals, or 6% of the population. The analysis by Policy in Practice indicates that areas such as Blaenau Gwent, Merthyr Tydfil, and Neath Port Talbot would be the hardest hit per capita.

Brian Evans, a 62-year-old resident of Swansea who relies on Personal Independence Payments (PIP) for mobility support, expressed anxiety over the uncertainty surrounding his benefits. He emphasized the importance of PIP for essential expenses, stating, “If things are cut back any further, I don’t know how I’ll manage.”

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has stated that it will not compromise on protecting individuals who need support, assuring that the social security system will remain available for those unable to work. However, the proposed reforms have raised concerns about the adequacy of support for vulnerable populations.

While the reforms are currently in the consultation stage, the potential impact on low-income individuals and families in Wales underscores the need for careful consideration and assessment of the proposals.
