Barnsley Farmer Took Own Life Over Inheritance Tax, Inquest Told

An inquest has concluded that a 78-year-old farmer from Barnsley took his own life due to mounting anxiety over impending inheritance tax changes. John Charlesworth, known as Philip, was found dead in a barn on his family farm in Silkstone on October 29, the day before the government’s Budget announcement. His son, Jonathan, testified that his father believed the tax changes would jeopardize the farm’s future, leading to his decision to end his life.

The inquest revealed that Charlesworth had been increasingly concerned about the government’s proposals and the lack of clear information regarding their impact on the farm. Jonathan Charlesworth stated, “He thought he was doing it for the good… I think he woke up that morning and thought, ‘I’m not risking it, I’m not risking losing everything I’ve worked for.'”

The coroner recorded a verdict of suicide, acknowledging the significant stress caused by his responsibilities, including caring for his wife, who had severe dementia and cancer. Despite having no prior mental health issues, Charlesworth’s growing anxiety over the inheritance tax changes was deemed a contributing factor to his tragic decision.

This case highlights the potential psychological impact of financial policies on individuals, particularly those in rural communities reliant on family-run businesses. It underscores the need for clear communication and support for those affected by such changes.
