The Royal Air Force (RAF) celebrated 75 years of air operations in Shropshire with a ceremonial parade at RAF Shawbury, honouring a tradition of service, training, and community connection spanning three-quarters of a century.

The parade featured personnel from RAF Shawbury and RAF Cosford, led by the Station Commander and accompanied by the Band of the RAF Regiment. The procession wound through the base, including a flypast from vintage and modern aircraft, before concluding in a formal ceremony attended by local dignitaries and serving members.

RAF Shawbury’s heritage dates back to its origins in 1917 as part of the Royal Flying Corps, later becoming RAF Shawbury in 1918. For 75 years, the base has been central to training efforts, including pilot education, air operations, and air traffic control. Today, it houses the Defence Helicopter Flying School, the Central Flying School (Helicopter) Squadron, and the Defence College of Air and Space Operations.

During the parade, the Station Commander reflected on the base’s legacy: “Seventy-five years of operations here represent not just continuity of service, but the evolution of aviation capability and the excellence of RAF training in Shropshire.” Personnel marched in precision drill, honouring past generations of pilots, engineers, cadets, and support staff.

In addition to recognition of historical contributions, the event showcased RAF Cosford’s ongoing role in technical training. Cosford provides education in fields such as aeronautical engineering, photography, physical training, and radio operations for RAF personnel. Representatives from the RAF Museum Midlands and cadet units also took part, underscoring RAF ties to the local community.

Crowds of residents and families watched the ceremony, greeted by the sight of historical aircraft preserved and maintained by the RAF Museum. The event included a commemoration of the base’s role in national defence, disaster response, and peacekeeping missions over multiple decades.

RAF Shawbury continues to serve as a primary helicopter training centre for the RAF and allied forces, preparing pilots and crews for modern missions. Its enduring contribution to Shropshire has made it a significant employer and regional anchor for military aviation.

This anniversary parade reflects a traditional centre-right approach to defence and civic engagement, honouring military heritage, celebrating readiness, and reinforcing the value of disciplined service. As the RAF looks to future challenges, the 75-year milestone reaffirms both its commitment to excellence and its deep connection to communities in Shropshire and across the UK.
