Actor Michael Ward Charged with Alleged Rape and Sexual Assault

British actor Michael Ward, widely known for his breakout performance in the Netflix series Top Boy, has been formally charged with multiple counts of rape and sexual assault following an alleged incident that reportedly occurred in January 2023. The 27-year-old, originally from Jamaica, is expected to appear voluntarily at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, August 28.

According to the Metropolitan Police, Ward is facing two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault. The allegations stem from a complaint made by a woman whose identity is being kept confidential for legal and privacy reasons. Officers have confirmed that the actor has not been arrested and is cooperating with the legal process.

Detective Superintendent Scott Ware, overseeing the investigation for the Metropolitan Police, stated, “Our specialist officers continue to support the woman who has come forward. We know investigations of this nature can have a significant impact on those who make reports.”

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has reviewed the evidence and authorised the charges against Ward. Catherine Baccas, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London South, confirmed the decision in a public statement: “Having carefully reviewed a file of evidence, the Crown Prosecution Service has authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Michael Ward, 27, with two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault against a woman in January 2023.”

She added a cautionary note regarding public discourse and media coverage surrounding the case: “We remind all concerned that proceedings against the suspect are active, and he has a right to a fair trial. It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary, or sharing of information online that could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”

Ward has responded to the allegations by denying all charges. In a statement issued through his representatives, the actor said: “I deny the charges against me entirely. I have cooperated fully with the police throughout their investigation and will continue to cooperate. I recognise that proceedings are now ongoing, and I have full faith that they will lead to my name being cleared. Given those proceedings, I am unable to comment further.”

Ward rose to prominence through his role as Jamie in Top Boy, a drama centred on gang life in London, which earned him critical acclaim. His growing profile includes appearances in films such as The Beautiful Game, The Book of Clarence, and The Old Guard. Prior to his mainstream success, he was also featured on The A List, where he built a reputation as one of Britain’s rising acting talents.

Ward remains free while awaiting his court date and has not been remanded in custody. The investigation is ongoing, and the police or Ward’s legal team has issued no further comments at this time.
