Algerian Migrant Found Guilty of Raping Three Victims in Manchester’s City Centre

Sid Ali Djelid, a 39-year-old Algerian national, has been convicted of five counts of rape following a series of violent attacks on three people in Manchester city centre. The offences took place between February and July 2024 and involved two male victims and one female. All three victims were intoxicated at the time of the assaults.

According to court proceedings reported by the Manchester Evening News, Djelid carried out the first rape on 18 February 2024, with two further attacks occurring in the city’s Gay Village on 12 June and 16 July that same year. The court heard that Djelid followed his victims from local bars and isolated them in secluded locations such as alleyways before violently attacking them. In some instances, he also stole from his victims.

Djelid, who resided in Gatcombe Square, Manchester, was identified through CCTV footage and forensic evidence. He was arrested on 22 July 2024 after being caught on camera fleeing the scene of the final assault. His pattern of predatory behaviour has drawn comparisons to findings from a 2022 Journal of Interpersonal Violence study, which reported a 70% reoffending rate among untreated serial sexual offenders.

The case has sparked public concern over crime and immigration enforcement. Despite calls on social media for a response from government officials, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, no official statement has been issued. The conviction also comes amid declining prosecution rates for rape in England and Wales, which fell to just 1.6% in 2024 according to Ministry of Justice statistics.

Greater Manchester Police have urged any further potential victims to come forward. Sentencing is expected in the coming weeks.
