Amber Weather Alert Issued as Storm Floris Set to Batter Scotland with Dangerous Winds

Scotland faces significant disruption on Monday as Storm Floris brings powerful winds, heavy rain and a heightened risk to public safety, prompting the Met Office to upgrade its warning level from yellow to amber.

The UK Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for large parts of Scotland ahead of Storm Floris making landfall early on Monday morning. The storm, named on Friday, is forecast to bring damaging gusts, flying debris, and hazardous conditions to much of the northern UK. The amber alert is in place from 10am to 10pm, with yellow warnings still active across Northern Ireland and northern England from 6am to midnight.

The storm is expected to bring “a spell of unusually strong west or north-westerly winds” across Scotland, with inland gusts of 40–50 miles per hour (mph) and coastal or high-altitude areas facing speeds of up to 70 mph. According to the Met Office’s chief operational meteorologist Matthew Lehnert, some exposed locations could see gusts as high as 85 mph. Winds of that strength carry the potential to uproot trees, damage roofs and windows, and endanger pedestrians with airborne debris.

The Met Office has warned of a “danger to life” in affected areas, particularly along coastal routes, where large waves and beach material may be thrown onto roads and into properties. Ferry services in western Scotland have already been cancelled, with operator CalMac confirming multiple route suspensions. Travel by road and rail is also expected to be severely impacted.

Network Rail announced on Sunday that it would close several lines from noon on Monday, with remaining services running at reduced speeds and extended journey times due to safety restrictions. National Rail urged commuters to check schedules in advance, warning that travel would likely be disrupted throughout the day.

Motorists have been advised to drive with caution, especially in rural or wooded areas where branches and debris may fall onto roads. The AA (Automobile Association) recommended that anyone needing to travel on Monday should leave extra time for their journey, drive slowly, and remain vigilant for sudden hazards.

In Edinburgh, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo cancelled its scheduled Monday evening performance due to the forecast. Other local events and outdoor shows are also expected to be postponed or called off.

Storm Floris marks the sixth named storm of the 2024–25 storm season and the first since Storm Éowyn in January, which left three people dead and caused over one million power outages across the UK, Ireland, and Norway. With winds set to intensify from early Monday, authorities are urging residents in affected regions to stay indoors wherever possible and monitor local updates.
