Amnesty International Warns: Trump’s Return Fuels Global Human Rights Crisis

LONDON, United Kingdom, Human rights around the world are facing a historic and dangerous unraveling, driven in part by a wave of authoritarianism and emboldened by the return of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency, Amnesty International said in its annual report released Tuesday.

The organization paints a grim picture of 2024, describing a year marked by growing global instability and widespread rights violations. Amnesty’s Secretary General, Agnes Callamard, warned that the international legal system painstakingly built in the aftermath of World War II is being relentlessly dismantled.

“Unprecedented forces are hunting down the ideals of human rights for all,” Callamard said, decrying what she called a coordinated assault on decades of international progress.

Conflicts and systemic abuses in regions such as the Middle East, Sudan, Ukraine, and Afghanistan have left millions devastated. In Afghanistan in particular, women’s freedoms have been sharply eroded.

Amnesty’s report sharply criticizes global superpowers including the United States, Russia, and China, accusing them of actively undermining international law and stalling progress on poverty and discrimination.

As authoritarian leaders rise and global conflicts escalate, the organization is calling for urgent international action to defend the foundational principles of human rights before they are lost.
