A 78-year-old British tourist has died after falling ill while swimming in a hotel pool on the Greek island of Crete, prompting the arrest of three individuals on suspicion of manslaughter by negligence.

The incident occurred at a hotel in Hersonissos on Sunday afternoon. According to reports, the elderly woman, who has not been publicly named, became unwell while in the pool. She was pulled from the water and administered first aid at the scene before being transferred to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Greek authorities have arrested a 21-year-old lifeguard, along with two hotel managers aged 51 and 41. Police allege the lifeguard was meant to be on duty at the time of the incident but was not present. All three were taken into custody on charges relating to negligent manslaughter but have since been released on bail pending further investigation.

This tragic death follows another recent fatality involving a British holidaymaker in the same region. Just weeks earlier, on 20 July, a 74-year-old British man was discovered unconscious on a sun lounger at Stalis Beach, also in Crete. Emergency services responded swiftly, but the man was declared dead at the scene. A spokesperson for the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office confirmed that support was being provided to the deceased’s family, stating: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities.”

The latest incident in Crete is not an isolated case. A separate drowning occurred in Spain last week, involving another British national. A 72-year-old man was found unresponsive in the pool of the BJ Playa Blanca Hotel in S’Illot, Majorca, on the morning of 29 July. Emergency responders arrived shortly after an alarm was raised at 8:37 a.m. Despite resuscitation efforts from paramedics and an air ambulance team, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Spanish medical emergency service SAMU confirmed the details, stating: “A British man aged 72 has been found floating face down in the swimming pool of a hotel in S’Illot… he had gone into cardiac arrest. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, he died.”

The BJ Playa Blanca Hotel, located just 15 minutes from the popular Love Island villa in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, is known for attracting British tourists and boasts over 100 rooms. According to its website, the resort offers “access to the best white sand beaches and mountainous areas of the island.”

Authorities in both Greece and Spain are continuing their investigations. The back-to-back incidents have raised fresh concerns over tourist safety in Mediterranean holiday hotspots, particularly in hotels and resorts where staffing, lifeguard presence, and medical response may vary.
