Child Killers Lucy Letby and Beinash Batool Spend Time Playing Uno in Prison

Child killers Lucy Letby and Beinash Batool, the stepmother of murdered Sara Sharif, have reportedly grown close during their time at HMP Bronzefield, a Category A prison in Surrey, where they enjoy enhanced privileges including the freedom to socialise and play games such as Uno. Their behaviour has caused frustration among prison staff and other inmates.

Letby, 35, convicted in 2023 of murdering seven infants and attempting to murder seven more during her time as a neonatal nurse, and Batool, 31, serving time for her involvement in the brutal killing of Sara Sharif, are currently housed on a secure wing designed for their protection due to the risk of attack from other prisoners. HMP Bronzefield is a high-security facility primarily for female offenders, with Category A denoting the highest risk prisoners.

According to sources, the two women have bonded over card games and cooking cheese toasties in the prison kitchen, often spending hours playing Uno together. Their companionship extends to sharing time in each other’s cells, along with other notorious inmates such as Michelle Smith, who poisoned her six-month-old daughter in 2007, and Sharon Carr, Britain’s youngest female murderer.

Prison Privileges and Public Outrage

A source familiar with the prison environment told The Sun, “It is a grim sight. They are very focused when playing and spend a long time at it. While many prisoners and staff are unhappy about this, the prison must balance maintaining order and allowing prisoners some comfort.” The source also noted that both Letby and Batool enjoy a degree of freedom due to their “enhanced” prisoner status, meaning they have access to better food and can engage in work activities.

Letby works in the kitchen, while Batool is employed in the prison library. Both women also have access to televisions with Freeview and DVD players. They can also order books and films from the prison library as part of their privileges. These measures, however, have led to discontent among fellow inmates, many of whom view the treatment as overly lenient considering the severity of their crimes.

Batool was implicated alongside Sara Sharif’s father, Urfan Sharif, and Faisal Malik in a horrifying case where Sara was reportedly bound, hooded, and beaten with bats before being strangled. The trio fled the country after the murder, and their trial is scheduled at the Central Criminal Court in London for December 17. The case has raised serious questions over the failures of police, schools, and social services to intervene despite numerous missed opportunities to protect the child.

Lucy Letby’s crimes shocked the nation as she became the most prolific child serial killer in British legal history, responsible for the deaths of seven babies and multiple attempts on others during a one-year period. Her case drew attention to systemic issues in healthcare and child protection.

A spokesperson for Sodexo, the private company that manages HMP Bronzefield, declined to comment on individual inmates when approached.

The contrast between the serious nature of their crimes and the reportedly cushy conditions enjoyed by Letby and Batool has sparked anger among the public and prison staff alike. While prison authorities emphasise the need to ensure the safety of all prisoners, including those who pose risks to themselves or others, the situation remains a troubling example of the challenges in managing high-profile offenders within the penal system.
