Debt-Driven Sheep Theft Shocks Welsh Farming Community

In a distressing incident in Carmarthenshire, Wales, a local farmer has pleaded guilty to stealing 73 pregnant ewes from a neighboring farm. Hywel Williams, 40, from Llangadog, admitted to the theft, which he attributed to financial pressures. Some of the stolen sheep were found on Williams’ land, while others were discovered at an abattoir and auction mart without their identifying ear tags. Additionally, some were given to another farmer to settle a debt.

The theft has had a profound impact on the victim, Rhodri Llyr Evans, who described the ordeal as causing “unbearable stress” to his family and business. The stolen ewes were all in lamb, highlighting the severity of the crime. The area has experienced a significant number of livestock thefts between April 2024 and March 2025, making this case particularly alarming.

Williams expressed deep regret for his actions, acknowledging that they were “unacceptable” and stating that he feels “ashamed.” In response to the crime, Williams was sentenced to a 12-month suspended prison term, ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work, and instructed to pay over £5,000 in compensation to the victim.
