Elton John Slams UK Over AI ‘Theft’ of Art

Elton John has strongly criticized the UK government particularly after a proposal that allows tech companies to use artists’ content without compensation unless they explicitly opt out. John called the government “absolute losers” and labeled a minister a “moron” for supporting the move, arguing that it amounts to “theft on a high scale.” He emphasized that the policy threatens the livelihoods of artists, particularly emerging talents who lack the resources to challenge such practices.

The controversy intensified when the House of Commons rejected an amendment to the Data (Use and Access) Bill that would have required AI companies to disclose the copyrighted materials they use. This decision contradicted the House of Lords’ vote in favor of the amendment, leading to accusations that the government is undermining creators’ rights. Elton John voiced his sense of betrayal, warning that the government’s stance could harm the UK’s reputation in the global creative industry, undermining the value of artists’ work in the digital age.

In response, over 400 prominent UK artists, including Sir Paul McCartney and Dua Lipa, signed a letter urging Prime Minister Keir Starmer to implement stronger copyright protections against unauthorized usage. The letter advocates for an opt-in system, requiring AI companies to obtain permission and compensate artists before using their works. The signatories stressed that without such protections, the UK’s £126 billion creative sector could face severe repercussions.
