England’s women’s national team secured a landmark victory by defeating Spain in a tense penalty shootout to win the 2025 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) European Championship, marking their second consecutive title and the first time an England team has claimed a major trophy on foreign soil.

The final, held in front of a packed stadium, saw England come from behind yet again, showcasing the same resilience that defined their entire tournament. Spain took an early lead with a header from Mariona Caldentey, putting pressure on the Lionesses before halftime. However, England’s resolve held firm. Manager Sarina Wiegman made a pivotal change by bringing on Chloe Kelly, a move that altered the momentum of the match. Kelly’s precision cross found Alessia Russo, whose well-placed header levelled the score.

As the match went into penalties, the pressure mounted, but England remained composed. Chloe Kelly, once again stepping up when it mattered most, just as she did in the 2022 final, slotted home the decisive penalty. Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton was equally instrumental, saving two of Spain’s attempts during the shootout, helping to seal the 4–2 victory on penalties after a 1–1 draw in regulation.

This win cements Sarina Wiegman’s status among the elite managers in football history, achieving three straight UEFA European Championship titles, two with England and one previously with the Netherlands. Her leadership and tactical acumen were on full display throughout the tournament, particularly in navigating a squad plagued with injuries and late-game deficits.

England’s triumph is also notable for the character shown across their campaign, having fallen behind in all three of their knockout-stage matches. Yet each time, the team clawed their way back, proving its mental strength and determination under pressure. The final was no exception, as the squad demonstrated not only technical ability but a deep commitment to each other and the cause.

Former England international Rachel Yankey, speaking to BBC Sport after the match, praised the team’s performance: “They’ve shown what it means to wear the shirt. Every time they’ve been tested, they’ve responded like champions.”

This victory not only represents a significant sporting achievement but also continues to inspire growing interest and investment in women’s football across the country. The Lionesses’ success on the international stage sends a clear message: England is not just participating,  they are setting the standard.
