EU and U.S. Trade Chiefs Intensify Talks Amid Trump’s Tariff Delay

On May 26, 2025, European Union Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič engaged in constructive discussions with U.S. officials, including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, following President Donald Trump’s decision to postpone the imposition of 50% tariffs on EU goods until July 9. This extension provides both parties with additional time to negotiate a comprehensive trade agreement and avert a potential economic conflict.

The EU has proposed a “zero-for-zero” approach, aiming to eliminate industrial tariffs on both sides, particularly targeting sectors such as automobiles and steel. This proposal seeks to address longstanding trade imbalances and foster a more balanced economic relationship between the U.S. and the EU.

Despite the optimism surrounding the negotiations, some EU officials have expressed concerns over the unpredictability of the process, citing previous abrupt policy shifts. Nevertheless, both sides remain committed to engaging in dialogue to resolve the trade tensions and strengthen transatlantic economic ties.

As the July 9 deadline approaches, the outcome of these negotiations will be pivotal in determining the future of U.S.-EU trade relations and the broader global economic landscape.
