Former Army Chief Warns UK Risks Being Unprepared for Future Conflict

General Sir Patrick Sanders, former Chief of the General Staff, has issued a clear warning that the United Kingdom (UK) faces a genuine threat of armed conflict with Russia by the end of the decade. He urged swift and serious action to strengthen national defence, citing a critical five-year window to rebuild capability and resilience.

In an interview published on 13 July 2025, Sir Patrick outlined grave concerns over the UK’s current defence posture. He pointed to dwindling troop numbers and inadequate civil preparedness as serious vulnerabilities. Having served during the Cold War and post-9/11 conflicts, he reflected on the stark contrast between past military readiness and today’s scaled-down forces. According to Sir Patrick, the British Army now includes fewer than 100,000 personnel when counting both regulars and reserves, a level he believes is dangerously low in light of mounting global instability.

While Russia remains bogged down in Ukraine, Sanders warned that it could reconstitute forces quickly and stage a limited assault on a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member within months. In his view, the UK must act with urgency rather than complacency. He expressed frustration that serious proposals for strengthening civil defence, such as underground shelters and command centres, have been sidelined on cost grounds. Yet, as he noted, countries like Finland view such preparations as essential national investments, not luxuries.

Sir Patrick was also critical of the recent Strategic Defence Review, which he argued failed to adequately address non-military vulnerabilities. He called for a wider approach that incorporates civil society, industrial capacity, and public education. This would include reinvigorating school-based cadet programmes and investing in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education to build future military and defence industry capability.

While the current Labour government has pledged to raise defence spending to 2.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030, Sir Patrick and other defence experts suggest this commitment is not sufficient. Without accelerated and targeted investment, the UK could face a scenario in which it is unable to sustain combat operations or defend itself effectively.

From a centre-right perspective, his warning is a wake-up call. Peace through strength remains a timeless principle. Britain must invest not only in equipment but also in people, preparedness, and resolve, before threats become crises.
