A former boutique hotel in York, once home to the award-winning Vices Hotel and its Michelin Guide-featured restaurant, is back on the market as a luxury residence, now priced at £1.3 million.

The property on Alma Terrace was originally a Victorian police station built for the East Riding Constabulary. It has since undergone a complete transformation by its current owners, Daniele Curro and Moreno Carbone, who converted the historic building into a four-bedroom home before closing the hotel and restaurant in 2023 due to personal circumstances. It was previously listed at £1.85 million.

The pair is credited with turning the once utilitarian structure into a high-end residential property, complete with a commercial-grade kitchen and dining area cleverly situated within what were once three police cells. The attention to detail and commitment to quality have not gone unnoticed.

Matthew Hendry, managing director at Naish, the estate agency handling the sale, said the property’s history and renovation make it one of the most attractive listings in the area. “This property has so much history,” he said. “The current owners completely transformed the building into an incredible four-bedroom home.”

“New owners can move in and enjoy one of the most stylish homes on the York market,” Hendry added.

Previously operating as the Vices Hotel, the venue also featured the acclaimed Allium restaurant. Known for its intimate and refined atmosphere, the restaurant earned a place in the Michelin Guide, cementing its status as a standout dining experience in the city. Its closure in 2023 came as a surprise to many in the local hospitality scene.

As it is now known, the revamped Alma House has retained much of its original structure’s character, combining Victorian features with contemporary design and luxury fittings. The estate agent’s listing notes that “no expense was spared” during the renovation and claims that “every room exudes sophistication.”

Beyond the aesthetics, the property offers four spacious bedrooms, generous living areas, and a bespoke kitchen suited both for home cooking and professional culinary use. The blend of history and modernity and its quiet residential setting, just a short walk from the city centre, make it a unique opportunity for buyers seeking something beyond the standard family home.

“Properties like Alma House rarely, if ever, enter the market,” the listing adds, positioning the home as a rare find in York’s competitive property landscape.

With a revised price and a compelling story behind it, Alma House is expected to appeal to discerning buyers who value style, substance, and a touch of York’s rich heritage.
