Georgian Kent Home of Former Changing Rooms Designer Listed for £1.25 Million

Graham Wynne, one of the original designers from the 1990s BBC show Changing Rooms, has placed his Georgian property in Hythe, Kent, on the market for £1.25 million. Known for his bold design choices and role in transforming homes on screen, Wynne has spent three years personally renovating the 18th-century house, which he and his partner purchased in 2015.

Oak Hall, built in 1749, is a Grade II-listed, five-bedroom residence with over 2,500 square feet of living space spread across four floors. Originally structurally sound, the property required cosmetic updates, which Wynne approached with the same eye for detail he brought to his television projects. His goal was to create a “classic, lived-in country house style” that would remain timeless, drawing inspiration from British interior icons like Colefax and Fowler.

The couple initially searched for smaller homes closer to the seaside but were taken by Oak Hall’s charm and architectural symmetry. Wynne, who worked for years on Ralph Lauren’s creative team, applied his design expertise to restore the house in a manner sympathetic to its Georgian heritage. The renovation included replastering, reflooring, and carefully selected interior finishes using a mix of auction finds, thrifted furniture, and high-street fabrics. “It’s about being clever with what you’ve got,” Wynne explained.

The house includes a traditional country-style kitchen, dining, and sitting rooms on the ground floor, a library and bedrooms above, and a basement for wine and log storage. An outbuilding offers two garages. Decorative elements include panelled walls in neutral tones and Colefax and Fowler wallpaper in key rooms. Wynne also restored the garden, simplifying what had been a complex horticultural design.

Wynne, now 62, reflected on the contrast between TV design and personal renovation, noting the difference in time and practicality. “On Changing Rooms, we were trying to redo someone’s room in 14 hours. Doing my own home meant I could focus on what worked.”

The house has served its purpose well over the last decade, offering a retreat for family gatherings and holidays by the sea. However, with the space now more than they need, the couple has decided to downsize. Wynne has purchased a nearby bungalow and plans a full-scale transformation into a “mid-century, James Bond-style” home, embracing a modern aesthetic he’s long admired but never explored personally.

Oak Hall is being marketed by estate agents Savills. Wynne believes it would suit either a family or a couple due to its flexible layout and proximity to Hythe’s beach and high street. As for the furnishings, he said: “Make me an offer.”
