Historic Aircraft to Fly Over IWM Duxford

The Imperial War Museum (IWM) Duxford will host a spectacular evening flying display on Saturday, 16 August, featuring a range of historic aircraft from the UK and across the world. The event will feature formation aerobatics, airborne pyrotechnics and twilight displays of vintage warbirds over this Cambridgeshire heritage site.

IWM Duxford is renowned for preserving and exhibiting military aircraft and vehicles, with an emphasis on the history of the United Kingdom’s armed forces. This upcoming evening event will add a new dimension to the museum’s summer programme, providing visitors with a rare opportunity to experience classic aircraft flying after dark.

Otto the Helicopter (Schweizer 300C), described by the museum as “full of stunts and aerial madness”, is scheduled to perform. The Otto has gained popularity across Europe and North America, having performed shows in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Its displays are notable for spectacular pyrotechnic effects, making it an ideal feature for a night-time event.

The Curtiss P-40C Tomahawk and one of only two airworthy P-40F Warhawks, among the most-produced American fighters of the Second World War, will fly. The P-40F was developed from the earlier Curtiss P-36 Hawk and became one of the most-produced American fighters of the war. It was extensively used by Allied forces across multiple theatres and remained in frontline service until 1945. The Warhawk is remembered for its reliability and was praised by its pilots for its performance in combat.

The Republic P-47D Thunderbolt, a principal American fighter beloved by its pilots, will perform. It flew from Duxford during the Second World War. It was known for its formidable firepower and ruggedness, often returning to base despite sustaining battle damage.

The Hawker Sea Fury FB11, the final propeller-driven fighter to serve with the Royal Navy, is scheduled to appear. Although it entered service shortly after the war, the Sea Fury saw active duty during the Korean War and other conflicts. Its robust design made it popular with various overseas air forces.

The Flying Comrades, a Duxford-based aerobatic team, will perform close-formation displays in Soviet-designed Yak-18T and Yak-52 trainers. Their performances are marked by tight formations and precise manoeuvres, adding a unique element to the flying programme.

In addition, the Canadair CL-13 Sabre Mk 6, the only airworthy example in Europe, will appear. This Canadian-built version of the American F-86 Sabre jet fighter was used extensively during the Korean War and is noted for breaking multiple speed records, including becoming the first aircraft flown by a woman to exceed the speed of sound.

A special pyrotechnics display will accompany the flying programme, courtesy of Airborne Pyrotechnics, a father and son team. They will launch fireworks from Grob motor gliders, combining aerial performance with a fireworks show for an immersive spectacle.

Tickets for the event have been highly sought after, with visitors encouraged to plan their trips to IWM Duxford. The museum advises attendees to arrive early and to check the official website for detailed event schedules and health and safety guidance.
