Hyndburn Council Secures Final Market Chambers Property in Major Town Regeneration Push

Hyndburn Council has completed the purchase of the final property within the historic Market Chambers complex. This marks a significant step forward in the transformation of Accrington town centre. The acquisition finalises a lengthy and complex process involving over 30 different property interests, spanning Market Chambers, Burtons Chambers, and the Market Hall. With full ownership now secured, the council can proceed to the next stage of its regeneration initiative.

Detailed building surveys and design finalisations are scheduled to begin shortly, with a tender process expected later this summer. This will cover façade cleaning, repairs to windows and roofing, and the construction of a new glazed frontage for the ground floor. Visible changes to the site are anticipated by 2026 as part of this phase of development.

This milestone is a key component of a broader masterplan worth over £70 million aimed at revitalising Accrington town centre. The regeneration strategy seeks to create a more attractive, accessible, and economically active environment for both residents and visitors. The comprehensive plan is backed by financial support from the United Kingdom (UK) Government.

Councillor Clare Pritchard, Hyndburn Council’s lead for town centres, accepted the keys to the final property. “This is an exciting moment for Accrington Town Square. Securing this final property means we can now move forward with real momentum. These buildings are part of our town’s heritage, and soon they’ll be part of its future, reimagined as DOME, a vibrant creativity hub for our community,” she said.

Market Chambers is one of three notable buildings situated on Accrington Town Square, slated for restoration. Work is already progressing on both the Market Hall and Burton’s Chambers. External façade work and preliminary preparations have been completed on these sites.

Tender submissions for the internal fit-out of the Market Hall and Burton’s Chambers have now been returned and are undergoing evaluation. Construction to refurbish the interior spaces is expected to begin in the coming months.
