Indian Army Strengthens Air Defense with Locally Manufactured Igla-S Systems

In a strategic move to bolster its air defense capabilities, the Indian Army has officially inducted locally produced Igla-S missile systems into its arsenal. Announced on February 17, 2025, this enhancement is seen as a significant step towards strengthening India’s defense infrastructure and self-reliance in military technology.

The Igla-S system, a portable surface-to-air missile designed to counter a variety of aerial threats, is known for its advanced infrared homing guidance and effectiveness against both fixed-wing aircraft and rotary-wing platforms. 

This induction aligns with India’s broader objectives of enhancing indigenous defense production, reducing reliance on foreign arms, and improving operational readiness.

“Today marks a crucial milestone in our efforts to fortify our air defense capabilities,” said a spokesperson from the Indian Army. “With the introduction of these advanced systems, we are not only enhancing our defensive posture but also demonstrating our commitment to self-sufficiency in defense production.”

The development and production of the Igla-S systems were undertaken by Indian defense manufacturers under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, which aims to promote local manufacturing and attract foreign investments in the defense sector. This move is expected to create jobs and foster technological advancements within the country.
