Libyan General Released in Italy Despite ICC Arrest Warrant

ROME — Libyan General Mahmoud al-Werfalli, wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes, has been released from custody in Turin following his surprise arrest last week.

Italian authorities cited insufficient grounds for his continued detention under international legal standards, a move that has drawn condemnation from rights groups.

Al-Werfalli, a senior figure in Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army, faces accusations of extrajudicial killings and crimes against humanity during Libya’s ongoing civil conflict.

Amnesty International denounced his release, calling it “a miscarriage of justice” that undermines accountability efforts.

The ICC has reiterated its call for member states to uphold their obligations under international law, urging renewed efforts to bring al-Werfalli to justice.

His release raises questions about Europe’s commitment to enforcing global human rights standards amid complex geopolitical considerations.
