Liverpool Pushes Forward in Pursuit of Isak Amid Summer Overhaul

Liverpool Football Club is continuing its major summer overhaul, now setting its sights on Swedish striker Alexander Isak. With nearly £300 million already spent on new arrivals, the club remains active in the transfer market, even as it faces the need to balance spending with potential player sales.

Alexander Isak, currently with Newcastle United, has reportedly informed the club of his desire to leave, according to various sources. His name had previously been linked to Liverpool before the arrival of Hugo Ekitike, who signed for £79 million. Despite already shattering the British transfer record with a £116 million move for German midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, Liverpool is believed to still hold interest in Isak. Any move for the Swedish forward would likely demand a fee exceeding that landmark figure.

The Reds kicked off their summer spending with the signing of Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5 million, followed by Milos Kerkez for an additional £40 million. The spending spree, while demonstrating the club’s ambitions, also points to the need for balancing the books. Consequently, players such as Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Harvey Elliott have been linked with possible exits. Two of those players were notably absent during Liverpool’s recent 4-2 defeat to AC Milan in a preseason match held in Hong Kong.

Manager Arne Slot confirmed that Colombian winger Luis Diaz was left out due to ongoing uncertainty regarding his future. “In Lucho’s situation, it was [linked to his future], yeah. There are a lot of rumours around it lately,” Slot said, adding that Diaz continues to train well. Bayern Munich recently made a £58.5 million bid for the winger, which Liverpool rejected. Slot also mentioned that Darwin Nunez was not risked due to a minor injury concern, a decision similarly made for Wataru Endo, who had trained but was also kept out as a precaution.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe, addressing speculation around Isak, stated that while he has an opinion, the final decision lies with the club’s board. “The manager, of course, has an opinion, but ultimately the decision will rest with the board,” Howe said, as quoted in a post-match interview. He added that Newcastle United remains in a “very strong position financially” and is not under pressure to sell.

As Liverpool continues reshaping its squad, the pursuit of Alexander Isak signals both ambition and a calculated strategy. While balancing major signings with potential departures, the club appears intent on reinforcing its competitive edge ahead of the new season.
