Petition for Snap General Election Piles Pressure on Starmer

More than 340,000 people have signed a petition calling for a general election within the next month, adding further strain to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership.

The petition, launched last month by campaigner Nicola Cree, states: “We want an immediate General Election to be held. We think the majority need and want change.” Public dissatisfaction with the Labour government has grown since its election victory in July, fuelled in part by controversial decisions to cut winter fuel payments and remove inheritance tax relief for farmers.

Sir Keir’s position has been further challenged by the emergence of a new political force led by former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. The party’s creation has intensified pressure on the Prime Minister, particularly in his own constituency. A source close to Mr Corbyn told GB News: “At the last election, Starmer lost almost 20,000 votes amid a strong challenge by independent progressive Andrew Feinstein, who came second with 19 per cent of the vote. Next time around, with a longer campaign, more resourcing and Starmer’s colossal unpopularity, a big upset is more than possible.”

Mr Feinstein’s previous result in Holborn and St Pancras, where Labour has historically enjoyed strong support, has given Corbyn allies confidence that Starmer could face a serious challenge in future contests. Another source from Mr Corbyn’s camp added: “There is a huge appetite for real change and genuinely progressive politics in Holborn and St Pancras, but decisions on target areas and wider strategy will be made following the party’s founding conference.”

The petition’s rapid growth highlights the mounting public demand for an early vote, although the government is under no legal obligation to call one before the next scheduled election. Critics argue that Starmer’s policy shifts since taking office have alienated traditional Labour supporters, while others note that the Prime Minister is contending with both opposition parties and internal rivals.

While Downing Street has not directly addressed the petition, the continued rise in signatures and the potential electoral threat posed by Mr Corbyn’s new party add to the political challenges facing Sir Keir.
