Romania on the Edge: Centrist Dan Battles Far-Right Simion in High-Stakes Runoff

Romania is heading for a high-stakes presidential runoff that pits two starkly different visions for the country against each other: centrist mathematician and Bucharest mayor Nicușor Dan, versus hard-right nationalist George Simion, who’s one step away from clinching power.

Simion, leader of the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), surged ahead in Sunday’s first round, claiming 41% of the vote and dominating the electoral map, including 61% support from overseas voters. A self-proclaimed “Trumpist,” Simion has campaigned on slashing aid to Ukraine and curbing EU influence.

Dan, an independent and moderate voice known for his technocratic style, faces an uphill battle ahead of the May 18 runoff. His challenge now is uniting fragmented opposition forces to counter a growing wave of nationalism sweeping the country.

The coming weeks will test whether Romania chooses continuity and centrism or takes a sharp turn to the populist right.
