Starmer Holds Emergency Cabinet Talks Following Trump Meeting on Middle East Strategy

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called an emergency Cabinet meeting today to discuss the UK’s next steps regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The rare move, made during Parliament’s summer recess, signals the government’s intent to play a more active role in international efforts to restore stability in the region.

The urgent session follows Starmer’s recent meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Scotland, where the pair discussed a proposed roadmap for peace.

According to Downing Street sources, the Prime Minister outlined a joint framework currently being developed with European partners, including France and Germany, aimed at bringing “lasting peace” to the region. Starmer is also expected to consult with key Arab nations and other international allies over the coming days.

While speculation continues over whether the UK will formally recognise Palestinian statehood, Downing Street clarified that any such recognition would form part of a broader process aimed at achieving a secure and sustainable two-state solution.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said, “Recognition is not a question of if, but when. However, it must be part of a wider plan that ensures long-term security for both Palestinians and Israelis.”

Pressure is mounting both domestically and abroad for the UK to adopt a clearer position, as the humanitarian situation in Gaza worsens.

Starmer’s diplomatic approach—emphasising international consensus over unilateral declarations—appears intended to avoid exacerbating divisions while still committing to meaningful action.

Trump, speaking after he met with the Prime Minister, commended Starmer’s approach to regional security and praised his “fantastic” efforts to reduce illegal boat crossings into Britain.

However, the former President also issued a stark warning, urging the UK and other European nations to “get [their] act together” on border control, or risk undermining the stability of the continent.

The Cabinet meeting will likely set the tone for the UK’s engagement in Middle East diplomacy moving forward, with national security, humanitarian relief, and long-term political stability expected to be central themes.

As global eyes remain on the region, Britain’s role in shaping any resolution will depend not just on its moral position, but also on its ability to work in step with allies on a coherent and enforceable plan.
