Starmer to Meet Trump in Scotland to Press Trade Deal and Revive Gaza Ceasefire

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is set to meet US President Donald Trump in Scotland next week, aiming to secure progress on a bilateral trade agreement while pressing for renewed international support for a Gaza ceasefire. The talks will be held at Trump’s golf resorts in Turnberry and Aberdeen, offering a symbolic setting for serious diplomatic engagement.

Central to the meeting will be the UK’s push to remove tariffs on key British exports, notably steel and whisky. Despite earlier reductions on cars and aerospace components under the UK–US trade framework announced in May, steel exports to the United States remain subject to a 25% tariff. The UK government is seeking a technical exemption, allowing tariff relief for products certified as “UK-melted” steel, a move that could provide vital relief to Britain’s manufacturing sector.

Starmer is also expected to raise the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the UK has sharply criticised Israel’s aid restrictions. With mounting casualties and severe shortages of food and medical supplies, the Prime Minister will urge Trump to support efforts for a 60-day ceasefire. While Starmer has not backed unilateral recognition of Palestinian statehood, he continues to advocate for a negotiated two-state solution and greater access for humanitarian assistance.

This meeting follows Starmer’s previous visit to the White House in February, during which he and President Trump reaffirmed their intent to strengthen economic ties and collaborate on international security issues. Starmer had extended a formal invitation for a state visit from King Charles III, signalling continuity in the UK’s approach to its Special Relationship with Washington.

Although Starmer’s Labour government has positioned itself as cautious on foreign policy, this engagement with Trump demonstrates a pragmatic strategy: securing trade concessions while keeping Britain diplomatically relevant on global matters. His firm stance against purely symbolic recognition of Palestine also signals a desire to remain credible among allies without bending to internal pressure from party backbenchers.

France and several European Union member states have already pledged to recognise Palestine unilaterally at the United Nations. However, Starmer’s position remains that recognition must form part of a durable diplomatic settlement, not a short-term political gesture.

By tying economic concerns to geopolitical issues, the upcoming talks in Scotland represent an effort to assert the UK’s role on the world stage, balancing domestic economic interests with principled international diplomacy and reaffirming close ties with its most important ally.
