Dame Stella Rimington, the first woman to lead Britain’s domestic intelligence service, MI5, has died aged 90. Her death marks the end of a remarkable career that broke long-standing barriers in the intelligence world and helped usher in a more transparent era for Britain’s Security Service.

Rimington became Director General of MI5 in 1992, making history not only as the first female head but also as the first to be publicly named while still in post. She led the organisation during a period of significant change, which included responding to threats from Irish republican terrorism and adapting to new post-Cold War realities.

Born in south London in 1935, Rimington began her career as an archivist before entering the world of intelligence in 1967 while stationed in New Delhi. She formally joined MI5 in London two years later, rising through the ranks in counter-subversion, counterespionage, and counterterrorism roles before being appointed to the top job.

As MI5 chief, she pushed for greater openness in an institution traditionally known for secrecy. Under her leadership, the agency published its first official brochure and began releasing some of its historical files to the public. She also oversaw the agency’s relocation to its current headquarters at Thames House.

Following her retirement in 1996, Rimington was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the Bath. She went on to become a successful author, penning a memoir titled Open Secret and a series of espionage novels featuring the fictional MI5 officer Liz Carlyle. Her career is widely believed to have inspired the portrayal of “M” by Judi Dench in the James Bond films.

Current MI5 Director General Sir Ken McCallum praised Rimington for her trailblazing leadership, stating she represented “a visible example of the importance of diversity in senior roles.” He credited her with laying the groundwork for the agency’s modern culture of openness and inclusion.

Rimington died peacefully, surrounded by her family and dogs. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, and five grandchildren.

Her life and legacy reflect a pioneering spirit that not only shaped the intelligence community but also opened doors for women across the security sector.
