Storm Alert: UK Braces for Torrential Rain, Flooding, and “Thunder Fever” Threat

The UK is on high alert this weekend as the Met Office issues an amber weather warning for severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, and potential flooding across large parts of England and Wales. The warning, which will remain in effect until early Monday morning, predicts intense downpours, with some areas possibly seeing up to 50mm of rain within a few hours. Winds could also reach speeds of 50mph, making for treacherous conditions on the roads and increasing the likelihood of power cuts and travel disruption.

Storms are expected to begin forming around 2 pm on Saturday in Wales and the South West, gradually spreading eastward throughout the day. The initial conditions will be hot and humid, with temperatures soaring up to 30°C before the weather takes a violent turn. Flash flooding from surface water is a major concern, with emergency services urging the public to prepare for rapidly changing conditions.

Cities like Plymouth have already experienced the storm’s wrath, with severe flooding reported in several areas. Roads were closed, and the Theatre Royal was temporarily shut after its basement was inundated. The situation remains tense in other parts of southern England, where rainfall totals could exceed 80mm, particularly around Cardiff and surrounding regions.

Beyond the immediate threat of flooding and storm damage, health officials have raised concerns about a related phenomenon dubbed “thunder fever.” This condition occurs when high pollen levels mix with stormy weather, triggering severe asthma and hay fever symptoms. An estimated 7.2 million people in the UK are at heightened risk, particularly those with respiratory conditions. Doctors are urging vulnerable individuals to stay indoors during peak storm hours, carry their inhalers, and avoid unnecessary travel.

With the combination of heat, humidity, heavy rain, and airborne allergens, the storm poses a multifaceted threat to health, property, and transport systems. The Met Office is advising residents to stay up-to-date with weather alerts and prepare emergency kits, including necessary medications and supplies. Drivers are being warned to expect delays and possible road closures, especially in flood-prone areas.

As the nation prepares for a weekend of extreme weather, communities are being reminded to check on vulnerable neighbors and take all precautions seriously. Authorities stress that while the weather may shift quickly, readiness and vigilance are the best defenses against the dangers of sudden storms.
