Stuart Hogg Reduces Price of Mansion Following Domestic Abuse Conviction

Former Scotland rugby captain Stuart Hogg has cut £25,000 from the asking price of his five-bedroom mansion in Hawick, Roxburghshire, just months after being convicted of domestic abuse. The property, initially listed for offers around £850,000 in April, is now being marketed at £825,000 to attract a buyer.

Hogg, 33, and his former wife Gillian purchased the house for nearly £700,000 three years ago. The property became the centre of media attention following Hogg’s admission at Selkirk Sheriff Court to a prolonged pattern of abusive behaviour spanning five years. The charges included shouting, swearing, and controlling conduct toward Gillian, as well as sending her hundreds of alarming messages—once more than 200 in just a few hours.

In January, Sheriff Peter Paterson sentenced Hogg to a community payback order with one year of supervision as an alternative to imprisonment. A follow-up review in June at Jedburgh Sheriff Court determined that no further legal oversight was necessary at this time.

The property, located in a rural part of the Scottish Borders, is described in the sales brochure as a “unique opportunity” for equestrian or countryside enthusiasts. The listing highlights the home’s peaceful setting and its stylish interior, calling it “turn key condition with many pleasing and stylish features internally.”

Hogg, once regarded as one of Scotland’s rugby greats, amassed over 100 senior caps and represented his country in three British and Irish Lions tours. Despite his achievements on the field, his legacy has come under scrutiny following his conviction. Calls have been made for him to be stripped of the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) honour he received in the 2024 New Year Honours for services to rugby union.

After a brief retirement, Hogg returned to professional rugby last summer, signing a two-year contract with French Top 14 club Montpellier. The fallout from his legal troubles continues to affect his personal and public life, with the ongoing attempt to sell the property marking yet another chapter in the aftermath of the case.
