The United States has informed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that President Donald Trump is pushing for a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine to be finalised by 8 August. The announcement, delivered by a senior U.S. diplomat, signals a renewed push from Washington to bring an end to the war that has continued since 2022.

Speaking during Thursday’s session of the 15-member council, U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, John Kelley, stated: “Both Russia and Ukraine must negotiate a ceasefire and durable peace. It is time to make a deal. President Trump has made clear that this must be done by 8 August. The United States is prepared to implement additional measures to secure peace.” While Kelley did not detail what those measures might involve, his remarks made clear that the U.S. administration is willing to increase pressure should negotiations fail to progress.

The conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has resulted in extensive loss of life, the destruction of infrastructure, and economic repercussions across Europe. Although several rounds of negotiations have been held, a lasting resolution remains elusive. The Trump administration’s statement indicates a strategic shift towards setting a firm timeline to drive diplomatic movement.

The United States has maintained a leading role in supporting Ukraine throughout the war, supplying military aid, intelligence, and humanitarian relief. However, U.S. officials have increasingly stressed that a prolonged military campaign is unsustainable, reiterating calls for both sides to recommit to diplomatic efforts.

Whether the 8 August deadline can be met remains uncertain. The Russian government has yet to respond publicly, while Ukrainian officials continue to insist that any peace talks must begin with a full withdrawal of Russian forces from occupied areas.

Although the United Nations is not mediating direct negotiations, it continues to serve as a platform for international engagement on the crisis. Several members of the UNSC expressed cautious optimism at Thursday’s meeting, suggesting that Washington’s proposed timeline could help break the current diplomatic deadlock.

With the deadline fast approaching, attention is turning towards Moscow and Kyiv. The United States has made its position clear: meaningful negotiations must begin immediately, and progress is expected without further delay.
