Two men have been charged in connection with the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, and have been remanded in custody ahead of their next court appearance later this month. The incident has prompted serious public concern and calls for greater transparency around the backgrounds of those accused.

Ahmad Mulakhil, aged 23, was arrested by Warwickshire Police on 26 July and charged the following day with rape. He appeared before Coventry Magistrates’ Court on Monday, where he was remanded in custody. His co-defendant, Mohammad Kabir, also 23, was arrested in Nuneaton on Thursday. He has been charged with kidnap, non-fatal strangulation, and aiding and abetting the rape of a girl under the age of 13. Kabir appeared at the same court on Saturday and was similarly remanded.

Both men are scheduled to appear at Warwick Crown Court on 26 August.

Police are appealing to the public for assistance and have asked anyone who was in the Cheveral Street area of Nuneaton between 8:30pm and 9:45pm on Monday 22 July to come forward with any information. Witnesses can contact police by dialling 101 and quoting incident number 418 of 22 July.

Although Warwickshire Police did not confirm a report by the Mail on Sunday stating that both suspects are asylum seekers, the force issued a statement explaining that it follows national guidance which precludes releasing information about a defendant’s ethnicity or immigration status once charges have been filed.

The police added that they routinely work with local community leaders and elected representatives to share relevant information following serious incidents, including confidential briefings intended to support public reassurance and the integrity of ongoing investigations. Officers stressed that any sensitive information disclosed in those settings is provided under strict confidentiality to avoid compromising future court proceedings.

The case has renewed scrutiny over vetting and enforcement mechanisms related to asylum seekers accused of violent crimes, as concerns grow among the public about community safety and the government’s approach to border control and deportation.
